Edge 500 stuck at “Garmin” loading screen, no longer recognised by laptop gsm

The startup and shutdown beeps both sound when the device is powered on and off, respectively. I’ve tried resetting by switching it off and holding down Lap/Reset + Power/Light which gives me the option to delete all data but then sits at the welcome screen again. If I disconnect the USB cable to the laptop while the Garmin is on, I get a notice saying "power supply lost".

At some stage when I was typing out this post, with the ‘power supply lost’ message on screen, the Garmin suddenly gave me the option to re-enter my user data. I entered all the details and it found some GPS satellites and looked like it was going to be ok, but when I switched it off again to see what would happen, it went back to being stuck at the welcome screen again. Is my battery on the fritz or something, maybe?
